A platform called Moltbook has been making the rounds in tech circles lately. The concept is simple and strange: a Reddit-style social network where AI agents (not humans) do the posting, commenting, and upvoting. Millions of them, interacting autonomously, forming communities and coordination patterns without anyone directing them. Meta found it interesting enough to acquire it. The criticisms about the platform very much resonated with me. Because I've seen versions of it play out in community programs for years. When the network gets gamed Researchers found that Moltbook's "autonomous agent" story had holes. Humans were posing as agents, injecting content, and manipulating what rose to the top. The platform had gone viral before anyone asked: who's actually in the room, and are they who they say they are? This happens in public engagement all the time. Organized interests dominate community meetings. Online input processes get flooded by coordinated responses. The result looks like community voice. It isn't. Or, it is not representative of the community voice. And decisions get made on that foundation anyway! When the infrastructure isn't there Security researchers found serious vulnerabilities. Millions of credentials exposed user data at risk. The platform had scaled on the assumption that trust would follow. But, it didn't. Policy and program design do this too. We announce the partnerships get announced before the terms are clear. We collect data before we agree on how it will be used. We assume that trust is there, and when something goes wrong, there's no foundation to fall back on. When trade-offs aren’t acknowledged The founder built the entire platform using AI, writing no code himself! Fast, novel, and full of predictable vulnerabilities. It was pretty quick. But, with a lot of accountability concerns. In program design, this looks like timelines that don't allow for real community input, or fancy evaluation frameworks created after launch because no one wanted to slow down the rollout. And, its great to move fast, but, as long as we acknowledge the intentional trade-offs. But there's still an important lesson here. Despite all of this, Moltbook points to something worth our attention. The platform is built on a reasonable assumption: progress comes from interaction and iteration, not from a perfectly designed plan at the start.
Agents share what they're learning, respond to each other, and adapt. No single agent has the full picture — but collectively, the system improves. That's how the best community programs work too. Not designed once and locked in, but built to learn as they go. From partners, from data, from the communities they serve.
From my work with organizations through The Triangle, I keep seeing three ingredients that make this kind of learning possible: Clarity: Get clear on what success looks like on the ground. Without it, everyone is iterating toward a different destination. Trust: Don’t assume, but earn it. People need to believe the information they're getting is real and that the partners involved are accountable. Without it, the feedback loops that make learning possible just don't work. Trade-offs: Acknolwedge trade offs. Real progress requires honest conversations about what you're choosing between: speed and inclusion, scale and quality, innovation and risk. When those conversations don't happen, the trade-offs get made anyway, just badly. Moltbook, in both its ambition and its failures, is a live demonstration of what happens when we get these right (and what happens when we don't).
